Silent Hill: Revelation 3D writer/director Michael J. Bassett (Solmon Kane) is intent on delivering a standalone (disturbing) blend of psycho-horror, mystery, and thrills, while also heavily incorporating elements from the Silent Hill video games that fans appreciate. He has quite the catalog of deranged boogeymen at his disposal, ranging from demonic nurses armed with surgical tools to spider-like creatures made out of decaying mannequin parts.
The new trailer for Revelation 3D makes the film appear to work as a standalone horror flick, but nonetheless overflows with Silent Hill iconography (such as classic baddie, Pyramid Head). Whether or not Bassett is also going to be successful at delivering a satisfying viewing experience, is another matter.
Revelation 3D features a new protagonist played by Adelaide Clemens (essentially an unknown, here in the States) and reunites Games of Thrones duo Sean Bean and Kit Harington. Here is the synopsis:
In SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D, Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father (Bean) have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. On the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her forever.
The cast is rounded out by franchise newcomers Carrie-Anne Moss (the Matrixtrilogy) and Malcolm McDowell, along with returning players Deborah Kara Unger and Radha Mitchell (in limited capacity).

Bassett was full of praise for Christophe Gans’ first Silent Hill movie at the Comic-Con 2012 Revelation 3D panel, calling it a marvelous cinematic representation of the SH universe (there are certainly fans who’d agree). He promises Revelation 3D will surpass that film thanks to its cutting-edge technical qualities and native 3D – though, those could (conversely) be the semi-sequel’s downfall.
There’s a lot of atmosphere and hellish visuals that impress in the Revelation 3Dtrailer, but it’s weakened by the polished shooting/editing style that 3D filmmaking requires (and distracting CGI imagery). On the other hand: if Bassett weaves an intriguing mythology, then Revelation 3D could still offer a better story than Gans’ film (even if it lacks as much visceral punch).
Silent Hill: Revelation 3D opens in U.S theaters on October 26th, 2012.
